Separate four-vehicle wrecks in the vicinity of mile marker 94 on Interstate 81 last Friday resulted in four injuries, according to Virginia State Police.
Both of the wrecks occurred at 2:45 p.m. Friday, with one “pile-up” occurring at mile marker 94.4 and the other at mile marker 94.6. Traffic was stopped on the interstate at the time of the wrecks, but the reason it was stopped is unclear.
According to a police report, a Max Meadows man was charged with following too closely as the result of the 94.4 wreck.
Police said Kyle Walton Nester was southbound in a 2001 Dodge Ram when the truck collided with the rear of a stopped 2007 GMC cargo van. The van, owned by the Virginia Department of Corrections and driven by Marshall Ray Taylor II of Tazewell, was pushed into a 2009 Chevrolet rental car driven by Russell Ray Nunley of Knoxville, Tenn. The Chevrolet was then pushed into a 2006 Honda Pilot driven by Thomas Caleb Burgess of Herndon.
A passenger in the Chevrolet and a passenger in the Honda received minor injuries, but were not transported to a hospital for treatment, according to the report.
The GMC van sustained about $4,000 in damage, the Chevrolet had an estimated $2,500 in damage and damage to the other two vehicles was about $1,500 each.
Two children, whose identities were withheld, were injured and transported to an area hospital in the second wreck, State Police report. Condition reports could not be obtained without names.
In that wreck, Zachary Shane Wolfe of Dublin was cited for reckless driving when his 2008 Chevrolet Colorado struck a 2006 Toyota Sienna in the rear as the Toyota was slowing to stop behind other traffic.
As a result of the collision, the Toyota, driven by Sevy Cirstea of Tennessee, struck a Dodge Grand Caravan and a 2008 Toyota Camry. The Grand Caravan was driven by Donna Marie Roark of Hampton and the Camry was operated by Kitan Petreski of Alexandria.
The injured children were in the Sienna, according to State Police.
Damage estimates for the vehicles were $8,000 each for the Colorado and Sienna; $4,000 for the Camry; and $3,000 for the Caravan.
