Now in its seventh year, Virginia Tech Athletics and the American Red Cross are partnering up for a blood drive on Friday, Aug. 8 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the West Side of Lane Stadium on the second floor.
Dononrs will be invited to tour the private second floor suites and will have a chance to meet Head Coach Frank Beamer. There will also be free food and prizes for presenting donors and prizes, including a signed football by Coach Beamer.
High school and college students make up to 20 percent of the Red Cross donor base, making summer a challenging time of the year for blood collection. Over the last 11 weeks, donations through the Red Cross have been down approximately 8 percent. As the number donors continue to decline, the shortfall is significant enough that the Red Cross could experience an emergency situation on the upcoming weeks.
For more information on donating blood, or to make an appointment, call 1-800-RED-CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit redcrossblood.org (sponsor code HOKIES). All blood types are needed to ensure a reliable supply for patients. A donor’s card, driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals must be 17 years of age or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and in general good health to be eligible to donate blood.
