Around 300 youth logged over 1,000 hours of reading this summer, earning them a variety of prizes through Pulaski County Library System’s “Paws to Read” Summer Reading Program (SRP).
“Children who don’t continue to read throughout the summer months … may experience a decline in their reading skills, which is known as summer reading loss,” said Jena Hardy, youth services librarian. “… It’s important for students to continue reading — so they don’t fall behind when a new school year starts.”
Hardy said the youth were given an option of tracking their reading hours on a paper log or online. Those who chose to keep track online registered 1,300 hours alone.
Prize drawings were held for children in grades three through five and youth grades six to 12. For every five hours of reading, they were eligible to submit a prize drawing entry.
Younger children were rewarded with gifts from a “treasure chest” that included prizes such as Pulaski Mariners baseball tickets, Randolph Park pool passes and books.
Winners of the prize drawings and the prizes they received were as follows:
•Johanna Burcham and Nathan Kelley, a plane ride over Pulaski County with County Administrator Peter Huber, who is a pilot;
•Emma Anderson, Jacob Duncan, Blake Bauer and Maddison Cooper, Target gift cards;
•Angel Dean, William Wallace, Eliza Morgan and Alexis Snyder, Walmart gift cards;
•Ben Kester and Anna Neal, Gamestop gift cards;
