WYTHEVILLE – A tractor and trailer hauling two Fed-Ex containers wrecked on the northbound side of Interstate 81 in Wytheville on Saturday morning.
According to Wythe County spokesperson Jeremy Farley, the wreck occurred at mile marker 73.3, at the I-81 and I-77 split. Wythe County Emergency Management Officials said the wrecked cargo included paint, which spilled onto the roadway.
Virginia HAZMAT officials arrived to assist the containment effort, due to the fact that paint is flammable and harmful to the environment, Farley said.
Although there is no danger to the public, responders on the scene announced that traffic would be an issue for motorists traveling on the northbound side of I-81 throughout the day, as crews worked to clean up the spilled paint. Traffic was reduced to one lane for much of the day.
The Wytheville Fire Department, Virginia State Police, Wythe County Emergency Management and Virginia HAZMAT crews worked the accident. It was a single-vehicle accident, and no injuries were reported.
