SALEM – A tractor-trailer caught fire on Interstate-81 this morning at about 8 a.m., causing traffic delays for up to six miles.
According to VDOT spokesperson Jason Bond, the accident occurred in the right northbound lane in Montgomery County, near mile marker 126. No one was injured.
The driver managed to get out of the vehicle after he noticed flames coming out of the back of the trailer. The fire destroyed the breaks, causing the driver to use the guardrail to slow down to a complete stop.
The flames have been extinguished. Although the truck itself was destroyed, the cargo it was carrying was not damaged.
The lane has been closed to cleanup the damage.
The fire started around a mile and a half south of the North Fork Road Exit, near the Route 603 Junction. Virginia State Police arrived on the scene shortly after.
At press time, no exact time frame had been established to reopen the lane. The cleanup is expected to take several hours.
