The new bridge over the New River on Route 114 is open and both lanes of westbound traffic are flowing; but it will be a while before both eastbound lanes are open.
Traffic started flowing across the new bridge May 21, according to Jason Bonds, spokesman for Virginia Department of Transportation. One lane of traffic on the eastbound bridge remains closed for paving.
Bonds estimated the paving project to take about 10 days to complete, dependent upon weather conditions. By the time guardrails and signs are installed, both eastbound lanes are expected to be open by July.
The eastbound bridge was constructed in 1990. Westbound traffic used the original 1939 bridge until June 2002, when it was damaged by an over-height truck and had to be closed.
Work on the new bridge began after the old bridge was removed in June 2011.
