By MELINDA WILLIAMS

Thirty-eighth District Sen. Phillip Puckett (D-Tazewell) resigned from the Virginia Senate Monday, citing undisclosed personal family issues and the desire to open the door for his daughter to receive a judgeship in Russell County.

In a statement released Monday afternoon, Puckett said he mailed a letter to Senate President Pro Tempore Charles Colgan Saturday resigning the Senate position he has held since 1999. The resignation was effective Monday.

A special election will be held to fill the vacancy, but a date for the election has not been set.
