You no longer have to head south or to the coast to find a Gator or Shark because they’re now invading the pool at Hensel Eckman YMCA, thanks to a new program for area youth.

The YMCA recently started a “Gators & Sharks Swim Club” for ages six to 17 with skill levels from beginner to competitive team swimmers. Each member must have basic swimming skills to participate and up-to-date physicals are mandatory.

“We ask that all interested club members be able to swim one length of the pool and have the ability to swim with their head in the water,” said Y Executive Director Allison Hunter. “The swimmers will also be required to participate in ‘dry-land’ workouts and will be instructed on proper nutritional habits as part of the Y’s mission.”

Prospective members do not have to be members of the YMCA to try out.

According to Hunter, the program “is designed as a stepping stone for all those who desire to pursue a future in swimming at the high school, collegiate or professional level. Every swimmer will be taught the values of respect and sportsmanship.”

The program got underway June 1 and runs through Aug. 31. Gators meet Mondays, 6-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 8-9 a.m. Sharks meet Mondays and Thursdays, 5:30-7 p.m., and Saturdays, 8-9:30 a.m.

For more information, call the YMCA at 980-3671 or stop by the facility at 615 Oakhurst Ave. in Pulaski.
