5K honors trooper, benefits scholarship

BURKES GARDEN — Registration began May 30 for a new 5K race to benefit a scholarship named in honor of a Pulaski County state trooper killed while directing traffic in 2012.

The Trooper Andrew D. Fox “727” Memorial 5K will be held Saturday, Aug. 2, at 9 a.m. on Route 727 in the Burkes Garden community of Tazewell County. Fox’s badge number was 727.

Pre-registration continues through July 1 at www.signmeup.com/site/reg/register.aspx?fid=CL2VZH7, but participants are welcome to register at 8 a.m. the day of the event.

Registration is $30, with all proceeds going to the Trooper Andrew D. Fox Scholarship Fund at Tazewell High School, where Fox graduated in 2003. He joined the State Police in 2006 and was assigned to the Dublin area office when he was struck by a car while directing traffic on special assignment at the Virginia State Fair.
