William Joseph Akers, age 69, of Barren Springs, Va., passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014 at LewisGale Hospital-Pulaski. Born Feb. 2, 1945 in Pulaski, Va., he was the son of the late Jessee Akers and Eliza Covey Akers. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Melvin Wade Akers, Frankie James “Jim” Akers and Ronnie Akers, and one sister, Edna Marie Sheppard. He was retired from the Lee Company in Winston Salem, N.C.
Surviving are his wife, Peggy Sue Akers, of Barren Springs, Va.; daughter, JoAnn Akers Wilson of Radford, Va.; son, Rickey Akers of Barren Springs, Va.; five grandchildren, Kayla Petzold, Jake Petzold, Jessee Akers, Malachi Akers and Gabrielle Akers; brother, Douglas Akers and wife, Lorretta, of Pulaski, Va.; sisters, Katherine Roseberry of Draper, Va., Sue Nester of Fort Chiswell, Va., Sadie Graham and husband, Melvin, of Dublin, Va., and many nieces and nephews including one special nephew, Randy Akers, of Dublin, Va.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014 in the Bower Funeral Home Chapel, Pulaski, Va., with the Rev. Eddie Dalton officiating. Interment will follow in the Memorial Christian Church Cemetery, Draper, Va.
The family will receive friends Wednesday from 1 p.m. until time of service at Bower Funeral Home.
