CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Samuel Early Smith, 84, of Charlotte, N.C., formerly of Roanoke, Va. and Dublin, Va., died on Monday, May 26, 2014 at Levine Dickson Hospice House in Huntersville, N.C. He was born on May 11, 1930 in Radford, Va., the son of the late Early Vaughn Smith and Ina (Kirtner) Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Marie (Verbeke) Smith, and his sister, Genevieve Smith Hall.
Smith served in the U.S. Air Force from 1948-1952 and retired from Painter Space Print in Buena Vista, Va. He had a life-long interest in space travel and robots, and in later years enjoyed international travel with his wife and son.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel Smith of Knoxville, Tenn. and Michael Smith of Springfield, Va.; two daughters, Lora Britanik of Southport, N.C. and Lucinda Smith of Roanoke, Va., five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
A funeral service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, May 30 at Thacker Brothers Lake Monticello Funeral Home, Palmyra, Va. Burial will follow at Fork Union Community Cemetery, Buckingham County, Va.
The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
