CLOVERDALE, Va. — Norma Jean Perkins Stoots, 82, of Cloverdale, Va., died peacefully Monday, May 19, 2014 at Carrington Place at Botetourt Commons in Daleville, Va. She has not “lost” her battle with cancer, but rather, asked us to continue in her absence. She was a graduate of the Dubin High School in Dublin, Va., class of 1952. She was faithfully married for over 50 years to Eugene E. Stoots Sr., who passed before her, on Dec. 19, 2005. She worked, until her retirement, at the Double Envelope Company of Roanoke, Va. She was a member in good standing of the Cloverdale Church of the Brethren.
She will be remembered for the warmth of her heart, often presented with cookies in colorful tins at Christmas time. She will be remembered for the strength of her character, sewn in patchwork pieces given in quilts, Barbie doll outfits, Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls, and other various crafts. She will be remembered for her enduring faith, planted every year in vegetable rows to ripen into autumn harvests. She was preceded in death by her father, Daniel Trigg Perkins; her mother, Hannah Francis Pugh Perkins; her brother, Raymond Perkins; her brother, Clifford D. Perkins; her sister, Carolyn Mills; her sister, Mildred Van Proyen and her brother James Harold Perkins.
She is celebrated in her life by her son, Eugene (Ed) E. Stoots Jr., and his wife, Margaret (Peggy) L. Stoots, her grandson, Christopher J. Stoots, all of Cloverdale, Va., and her sister, Gaynelle Barrett of Evansville, Ind., as well as an abundance of extended family across our nation, including those of her late husband.
Funeral services will be held at the Cloverdale Church of the Brethren, 11 a.m., Saturday, May 24 with the Rev. Patrick Starkey officiating. Entombment will be in Old Dominion Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to Good Samaritan Hospice of the Roanoke Valley whose staff helped to tenderly care for her the past four months. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m., Friday at Oakey’s East Chapel, Roanoke, VA, 540-977-3909.
