This year’s Memorial Day ceremony at Southwest Virginia Veteran’s Cemetery promises to be both “patriotic and inspiring” as a Bronze Star recipient provides the keynote address.
The ceremony will be held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, beginning at 10 a.m. on the cemetery grounds, 5550 Bagging Plant Road in Dublin. The public is invited to come out to the event to show their respect and appreciation to America’s past, present and future veterans.
Army veteran Capt. James McCormick is this year’s guest speaker. According to Military Times, McCormick was presented with the Bronze Star Medal for “meritorious achievement and remarkable valor” exhibited April 7, 2004 while he was a second lieutenant assigned as a Gun Truck driver during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
As his unit was providing security for the 1487th Transportation Company, McCormick was able to maneuver his gun truck to provide protection for the transportation company, while destroying the enemy, the Military Times article states. It notes that although McCormick sustained an injury to his hand, he “continued to fight and protect the convoy.”
