A Giles County woman was among eight people killed in wrecks on Virginia roads during the Memorial Day holiday, according to preliminary reports from Virginia State Police.
Linda M. Hilton, 32, of Newport, died Monday night when she overcorrected after the 1994 Jeep Wrangler she was driving ran off Route 460 in Giles County and overturned, said Virginia State Police spokeswoman Corrine Geller. She said Hilton and three passengers were ejected from the vehicle.
Hilton died at the scene of the 11:38 p.m. wreck, east of Alpine Road. All three passengers were transported to a nearby hospital for “treatment of life-threatening injuries,” Geller said. The identities of the passengers have not been released.
The crash remains under investigation.
Nine people were killed statewide in wrecks over the Memorial Day holiday last year, compared with 11 in 2012. This year’s statistical counting period ran from 12:01 a.m. Friday to midnight Monday.
Geller said seven of this year’s eight highway fatalities were not wearing seatbelts.
