Anthony Akers, head of Pulaski County’s recreation programs, has been named to serve as interim assistant county administrator, effective May 24. Current assistant administrator Robert Hiss is leaving Pulaski County for a new job in Georgia.

Akers started working with Hiss Thursday to get up-to-speed for taking over on an interim basis, according to a press release issued Friday by County Administrator Pete Huber. He said a target date for hiring a new assistant has not been determined.

A native of the county, Akers graduated from Pulaski County High School in 1988, having played football and softball for the Cougars. In 2010, he received a master’s certificate in the Local Government Management program of the Center for Public Administration and Policy at Virginia Tech.

Akers received a leisure and sports management degree, with a minor in business administration, from Elon College in 1992. He went to work for Pulaski County three years later as director of Pulaski County Office on Youth.

In 2000, he became director of community activities. His responsibilities have included overseeing the reopening and expansion of Central Gym in Pulaski; construction and “successful” management of Randolph Park near Dublin; development of after school programs at each of the county’s elementary schools; and overall growth of the county’s recreation department.

Huber said Akers will continue Hiss’ work with area human service agencies to build up families and reduce the need of placing youth in foster care, specialized treatment facilities or juvenile detention.

“Mr. Hiss has done a great job in a number of areas of the county and he will be working with Mr. Akers and other county staff in providing a smooth transition of work he has done over the past seven years,” said Huber.
