Wreck results in DUI charge

Fairlawn wreckBy MELINDA WILLIAMS

melinda@southwesttimes.com

A Radford man involved in a wreck in Fairlawn Monday morning has been charged with intoxicated driving, according to authorities.

Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office Captain Jeff Saunders said a vehicle being operated by Billy Ray Saul was eastbound on Route 114 around 8:30 when it crossed into the westbound lane and struck a utility pole.

Saul had to be extricated from the vehicle by crewmembers from Fairlawn and Radford fire departments. Saunders said the motorist was transported to New River Valley Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries.

Saul was subsequently charged with driving under the influence, said Saunders. Deputy D.A. Anderson is continuing to investigate the incident.

The utility pole sustained an estimated $5,000 in damage.

Just so everyone reading this knows my father was not under the influence toxicology reports are the proof.. Negative for everything.. He had just got off work at 8 went to Hardee’s to get a bisquit and that’s all he remembers if anything he fell asleep or had problems with his heart or sugar..

Courtney, article didn’t say he was driving drunk. You are providing false information now. The man WAS charged with intoxicated driving meaning the officer observed behavior one exhibits when under the influence of something.

Clearly facts about toxicology results weren’t available when the story was published. Hopefully SWT will do an update.

Ann, the officer was not “lying”. Extremely rude of you to assume such. He/She simply went on what they observed at the scene. Do you realize low sugar or having a stroke can appear like intoxication? No doubt these charges will be dropped, so just calm down.

Mindy, I’m glad for you your dad is OK and wasn’t seriously injured. It will all be OK and as previously mentioned SWT does need to provide an update once they confirm toxicology proves his innocence.

Forgot to add this is the reason toxicology tests are done. If a person is having physical distress they don’t want to wrongly charge them!!! Plus it’s needed for proof in court in instances when the person involved truly is wasted. In this case it will exonerate the driver.

This is the reply to what you said to Courtney in the paper the caption of the picture was “utility poll hit by drunk driver” so no she wasn’t providing false information

It doesn’t say drunk anywhere in the online article. If that was in the hard copy paper, then let’s hope for a retraction once it’s confirmed to be false.

If he had a medical issue a revocation of his driving privileges is still in order. He could have killed someone. Until he is medically cleared, he should not be driving.

Don’t you think if it was a known condition he wouldn’t of been driving.. Neither him or his family knew it was a problem..
