Upcoming Food Safety Trainings to Be Held

By SARAH D. BURKETT, FCS agent

Pulaski County Extension Office

Are you or others that you work with interested in preparing food safely for the public?

Each year, one in six Americans get sick, 128,000 are hospitalized and 3,000 die from foodborne illness.  The overall cost of the public is high, with the estimated economic cost of foodborne illness approximately $77.7 billion dollars per year, or approximately $1,626 per foodborne illness case. (Center for Disease Control statistics)

The top factors which contribute to foodborne illness are:  inadequate cooking, improper holding temperatures, contaminated equipment, poor personal hygiene and food from unsafe sources.  Safe food handling and preparation by food handlers can dramatically reduce illness and health costs.

The New River Health District and Virginia Cooperative Extension team teach three food safety trainings to assure food is safely handled by food service managers, food managers, caterers, chefs, dietary managers, temporary food vendors and persons who prepare and serve food in other food service establishments.

Listed below are short descriptions of each training available and dates and locations for future trainings.  In addition, group classes are available upon request for groups of 12 or more.
