Extended open enrollment period could still help some people

Although the open enrollment period to sign up for health insurance under the Affordable Care Act ended on Monday, March 31, some people can still sign up, depending on certain factors.

For those who encountered problems while signing up for insurance through the healthcare marketplace, or were interrupted by significant life event, a special enrollment period was set up to finish the process. According to the glossary on Healthcare.gov, those life events could include moving to a new state, changes in income, loss of other health coverage, and changes to family size such as marriage, divorce, or having a baby).

Other qualifying circumstances include adoption, gaining citizenship, gaining the status of an Indian tribe, moving outside of your insurer’s coverage area, and leaving incarceration.
