OSTEEN, Fla. — Woodson “Woody” Samuel Spraker of Osteen, Fla., passed away Wednesday, March 12, 2014 in Florida. Woody was born July 7, 1944 in Pulaski. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cecil C. (Bud) Spraker and Bernice (Bunny) S. Johnson and his stepfather,Lawrence Johnson.
Woody grew up in Dublin and graduated from Dublin High School and Newport News Apprentice School with degree in Tool Design. He was a member of the track team at Dublin High School and the NNAS, where he ran high hurdles and pole-vaulted.
Woody’s career was in sales mostly after working in Martinsville in a furniture factory, then at Ingersoll Rand as a tool designer and later worked in the golf course construction industry. He owned an appliance store in Salem and then later bought the Harris Brothers Hardware Store in Dublin and operated this for many years. He later sold real estate at Smith Mountain Lake and Roanoke and then later in Florida where he earned his broker’s license. Woody was involved with the Roanoke Regional Home Builders Association for several years earning many awards for his work in recruiting of new members. He served on the Board of Directors, chaired and served on various councils and committees and constantly worked to spread the word about the RRHBA.
Woody never met a stranger. He was an ambitious leader, known for his ‘never say never’ positive attitude, and contagious laugh. Woody was a very devoted and loving father, an outgoing spirit, an avid golfer, a big sports fan and animal lover. Woody will be sadly missed by his family and his countless friends.
Survivors include his daughter, Karen R. Spraker from New Smyrna Beach, Fla. and her mother, Betty G. Spraker of Pulaski; two brothers, Tom W. Spraker and Susie S. Spraker of Roanoke and Freddy V. and Margie M. Spraker of Osteen, Fla; fiancée, Carolyn W. Macleod, and her children, Shawn Macleod and Shannon Macleod Nelson; several nephews, Ben Spraker of Athens, Ga., John and Anna Spraker of Radford, Freddy and Pam Spraker of Floyd, Tim Spraker of Port Orange, Fla., Andy and Heather Spraker of Port Orange, Fla., and many numerous other relatives including great nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles and cousins.
The funeral service for Woody will be held at Stevens Funeral Home, Pulaski, March 22 at 11 a.m. with Jon Spraker officiating. Burial will follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Dublin. The Family will host a celebration of Woody’s Life at the Pulaski Country Club, Pulaski, immediately following the burial service.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to the American Cancer Society will be accepted in Woody’s honor.
