After three months of classes and practical training, more than a dozen firefighters are now getting to put their knowledge to the test with a “live fire” burn.
Pulaski Fire Department has hosted a Virginia Department of Fire Programs (VDFP) Firefighter II certification class since January, according to Fire Chief Bill Webb. He said the classes have been held on evenings and weekends and culminate with a “live fire” burn using the Mobile Live Fire Trainer provided by VDFP.
Webb said the mobile trainer allows students to practice their skills in scenarios they will encounter in real fire situations. Attainment of these skills must be demonstrated to receive state certification at Firefighter Level II.
Fifteen students from various fire departments are taking the course, primarily taught by certified instructors from Pulaski Fire Department, including Lt. C.S. Phillips, Capt. J.R. Kiser and others.
Phillips is serving as lead instructor and Kiser, as training officer.
