According to a report from WSLS on Wednesday, March 19, a large backlog in Virginia Medicaid applications being received caused an issue with Healthcare.gov.
An estimated 42,000 applications were stalled and delayed in the system. According to the report, the situation indicates problems at the local, state, and federal level.
Guy Smith, the director for the Pulaski County Department of Social Services (Pulaski DSS), said his department has been talking with different individuals about the issue at the state level. He said the problem stems from the difficulty with new computer systems and applications the state has incorporated, for which workers in different departments across the state are trying to ensure that clients get the benefits they need.
