MONTGOMERY COUNTY — Motorists traveling northbound on Interstate 81 through Montgomery County during nighttime hours should use extra caution starting today (Sunday).
According to Virginia Department of Transportation, the left northbound lane between mile markers 120 and 125 will be closed from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. each Sunday through Thursday as contractors conduct an “extensive pavement rehabilitation project.”
The project gets underway at 10 p.m. tonight and is expected to continue into October.
During the course of the project, a 24-hour detour we be required for about eight consecutive days. Since implementation of the detour is dependent upon weather and the work schedule, timing of the detour will be announced at a later date.
When the detour is implemented, nighttime traffic will be required to exit the northbound lanes onto Route 11/460 at exit 118C in Christiansburg and return to northbound I-81 at exit 132 (Dixie Caverns).
During the day, one lane of northbound I-81 will remain open for tractor-trailer traffic and all other traffic will be detoured onto Route 11/460 at exit 118C in Christiansburg.
Detour information is subject to change.
