LewisGale Hospital-Pulaski has announced that Travis Thompson, R.T. (T), was recently selected as the Service Excellence Employee of the Month for February.

The award recognizes outstanding employees who demonstrate service excellence beyond their job description.

Thompson joined LewisGale Hospital-Pulaski in 2008 and presently works at LewisGale Regional Cancer Center. According to a release issued by Joy Sutton, marketing communications manager for LewisGale Regional Health System, he is known for being an extremely caring professional who goes out of his way to make patients and their families feel safe and cared for when they arrive at the Cancer Center.

According to Sutton, his co-workers say that the level of service Thompson consistently delivers to patients, staff, and physicians is another reason that he is such a pleasure to work with and such an asset to the team there.

Michele Keesling, R.N., the nurse navigator and palliative care clinical coordinator at the Cancer Center, recalled a situation where Thompson went out of his way to comfort a patient who arrived for treatment, as well as the patient’s family.

“Travis arranged his schedule to go to the room and transport the patient for treatments each day,” Keesling said. “He went out of his way to talk with the patient and make her feel comfortable.”

Keesling also said that after the patient’s treatment had finished, Thompson went and visited the patient while she was receiving rehab, took her flowers, and visited her before discharge. The family said they were so thankful because he had become like family, as he was checking on their mother when they were unable to.

According to Marsha Myers, director of the Cancer Center, Thompson is a true inspiration to their team.

“He has a positive, energetic personality, and a great sense of humor that really helps relieve the stress during a typical workday,” said Myers. “I greatly appreciate all of the extra duties and responsibilities that he performs for our patients, department and hospital.”

According to Sutton, the Service Excellence Employee of the Month is selected based on a set of criteria. That includes demonstrating exemplary individual achievement, contribution and performance in their jobs, and other related duties beyond their own job description.

They must also inspire and support the organization’s ICARE Values of Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Excellence. In addition they should demonstrate a positive attitude toward responsibilities, co-workers, and customers, and serves as a role model for others.

Lastly, the Service Excellence Employee of the Month exercises servant leadership, takes initiative and accepts and carries out additional responsibilities beyond the regular job assignments for the good of the organization.

Other LewisGale Hospital-Pulaski employees nominated for the award were Donna Riner-Eads, R.N., Kathy Mitchell, C.N.A, Amy Wimmer, R.N., Rene Flatten, C.N.A., Rebecca Barker, R.N., and Charles Martin, R.N.
