A new attorney was appointed Monday for a Pulaski man recently sentenced for attacking the mother of his child with a five-pound sledgehammer.
Although George Marvin Viers Jr., 40, has not officially filed an appeal, a Pulaski County Circuit Court judge appointed Andrew Harman to represent Viers in the event an appeal is filed.
Judge Marcus Long Jr. pointed out that Viers’ trial attorney, Byron Shankman, no longer handles appeals. Viers will now have the ability to consult with Harman, of Wytheville, as to whether to pursue an appeal.
Viers pleaded no contest in September to aggravated malicious wounding, breaking and entering with intent to commit murder and violation of a protective order. He was recently sentenced to 45 years in prison, with 18 years suspended.
