Green’s career night lead Highlanders to road win in Charleston

North Charleston, S.C. - Javonte Green scored a career-high 33 points to go along with 11 rebounds, four steals, and two assists in leading Radford to a crucial 82-76 road victory at Charleston Southern on Wednesday. Green scored 15 points in the final six minutes of the game and spurred a Highlander 14-3 run which was the deciding factor late in the game.

With RU trailing by its largest deficit of the night, 64-59 with just over six minutes to play in a game that eventually saw five ties and nine lead changes, Green took over the game. After a free throw with 6:23 to play cut the lead to four, Green’s steal at midcourt and breakaway dunk sparked the Highlanders. His tip-in rebound gave RU the lead for good, 67-66, with 3:11 remaining.

The Highlanders closed out the win hitting 11 of 14 free throws down the stretch.

“What you saw tonight was a team continuing to mature,” Radford head coach Mike Jones said. “Tonight we did the things late in the game that win ball games. It was a great team effort.”

Both teams blistered the nets in the first half. Radford hit 56 percent from the field, and Charleston Southern hit 50 as the half ended in a 37-37 tie. For the game, the Highlanders shot 57 percent from the floor and held a 17-9 edge in points off turnovers despite the miscues by each team standing even at 12.

The double-double was the 21st of Green’s career and led four players scoring in double figures for the Highlanders.Ya Ya Anderson added 16, and R.J. Price and Kion Browneach chipped in with 10. For the second straight game,Brandon Holcomb erased three opponent shots defensively.Kyle Noreen tied a season-high with seven rebounds.

With the win, Radford (15-9, 5-4) remains a single game behind division leaders High Point and VMI in the Big South standing. RU travels Saturday to Presbyterian for a 2:00 p.m. start in another important conference road game.
