In the market for a job?

New River Community College career advisors are offering a series of free employment workshops in anticipation of New River Valley Job Fair Expo to be held April 2 on the college’s Dublin campus.

Sessions will be held in room 128 of the NRCC Mall campus in Christiansburg and in room 242 of Martin Hall on the Dublin campus. No pre-registration is required.

The series begins 6:30-7:30 tonight (Feb. 25) in Christiansburg with “Jump Start Your Job Search.” This session covers the basic strategies of an effective job searching campaign and helps participants tap into the “hidden” job market. The session will be held on the Dublin campus Thursday, Feb. 27, 6:30-7:30 p.m.

Following tonight’s “Jump Start” session, stick around the mall campus for an interactive workshop entitled “Electronic Job Applications in Our Wired World.” The 7:45-8:45 workshop demonstrates the “do’s and don’ts” when filling out an electronic application, submitting a PDF application, and completing a “fill-in-the-blank” application. The workshop will be held in Dublin Thursday, Feb. 27, 7:45-8:45 p.m.

Need to brush up on how to create a professional resume and cover letter? The workshop “Cover Letter and Resume Writing for Today’s Employers” will be held Tuesday, March 4, 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the Christiansburg campus and Thursday, March 6, 6:30-7:30 p.m., in Dublin.

Those spending a lot of time surfing the Internet for a job will find “Using Online Job Search Websites” beneficial. The workshop will show participants how to narrow the job hunt and effectively use their online search time. The Christiansburg mall workshop will be held Tuesday, March 4, 7:45-8:45 p.m. In Dublin, the workshop will be held Thursday, March 6, 7:45-8:45 p.m.

Of course, the job-hunting process isn’t complete without an interview. “Successful Job Interviewing” will cover research techniques for improving the job applicant’s chances, as well as questions applicants should ask employers. This workshop will be held Tuesday, March 11, 6:30-7:30 p.m. in Christiansburg and Thursday, March 13, 6:30-7:30 p.m. on the Dublin campus.

In an age where social media is a part of daily life, how you appear online can play an important part in your chances of getting a job. “How Do I Look on Social Media?” teaches participants how social media works and helps them discover how they appear online and what they can do to improve their online appearance. The workshop will be held in Christiansburg Tuesday, March 11, 7:45-8:45 p.m., and Thursday, March 13, 7:45-8:45 p.m., on the Dublin campus.

“Networking/LinkedIn: The Fastest Way to Get a Job” will be held Tuesday evening, March 18, 6:30-7:30, in Christiansburg and Thursday evening, March 20, 6:30-7:30, in Dublin. Participants will learn how to use an intentional and systematic approach to tap into personal contacts and access the hidden job market.

Finally, “How to Work a Job Fair,” will help participants learn how to get the most out of a job fair. The session will delve into what items to bring to a job fair, how to create an “elevator pitch” (quick summary of job skills and qualifications) and employer follow-up. The workshop will be held Tuesday, March 18, 7:45-8:46 p.m. at the NRV mall site and Thursday, March 20, 7:45-8:45 p.m. on the Dublin campus.
