Roanoke – Playing at a more deliberate pace, the Pulaski County Cougars hung with the Patrick Henry Patriots for the first half and for six minutes of the third quarter, only to lose 65-41.
Down by two, 22-20, at the halftime break the Cougars where behind just 37-33 with under two minutes to go in the third quarter.
With Pulaski controlling the ball and only down four points, Patriot guard Christian Kirchman stole the ball and pulled up to stroke a 3-pointer. Then Ty Esworthy hit a long 3-pointer to take a 43- 33 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Patriots (16-3, 10-0) would go on to outscore the Cougars 22- 8 in the final period as they stroked four more three’s to pull away for the victory.
Pulaski County (11-9, 7-6) had no one in double figures, as Marcus Burks led them with 7 points. Marcus Johnston, Cam Merchant and Hesus Hickman all finished with 6 points each.
The Patriots hit eight 3-pointers in the game, as they were too quick and too athletic for the Cougars.
“We played real well for almost three quarters,” said Cougar head coach Mark Hanks. “The biggest play was late in the third quarter when Kirchman stole the ball and hit a huge three for them. We were only down four and had the ball until that. When you play Patrick Henry everybody on the court needs to handle the ball very well, and tonight we didn’t.”
Patrick Henry was led by Kirchman with 19 points, as he stroked four threes. Cortez Ogden finished with 10 points.
The Cougar JV team saw their six game winning streak come to an end as they lost 60-52. Their record now stands at 15-5.
Elliott Brewster led the Cougars with 15 points. Bryant Grubb had 12 points and Brad Church chipped in with 9 points. The Patriots JV got 14 points from Josh Augustin.
Pulaski County will wrap up their regular season district play versus the Salem Spartans tonight. The junior varsity game starts at 5:30 and the varsity at 7 p.m.
