WOODLAWN – A man and woman who sustained fatal gunshot wounds Sunday were from Hillsville and apparently were married.
Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner said the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke identified the woman as Tammy Louise Vass, 49, of Kenmore Road in Hillsville and the man as Barney Elwood Vass, 57, of Kenmore Road.
The sheriff did not release what relationship the man and woman were to one another; however, a 2011 obituary in “The Gazette” newspaper identified them as the deceased’s son and daughter-in-law. A 2013 property assessment record listed them as living at 25 Kenmore Road.
Authorities have not released details on the shootings other than to say a witness saw the woman being shot by a man and the man apparently died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gardner did say the shootings appeared to be related.
The sheriff’s office received a report just before 1 p.m. Sunday that a male in a maroon SUV shot a woman along Joy Ranch Road and then got back in the vehicle and drove away. Deputies found the woman, deceased, on the side of the road.
Three hours later, police received another report of a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound on Iris Road, off Joy Ranch Road, and found a deceased male inside a barn. A maroon SUV matching the suspect vehicle in the woman’s shooting was found at that scene.
Gardner said evidence collected at the second scene, including a handgun, “appear to tie the two scenes together.”
