A Pulaski County woman and Hiwassee man each pleaded guilty Friday to felony child neglect for allowing their baby to go unfed for 10 hours.
According to Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Justin Griffith, Jenna Faye Kemp and Brandon Scott Taylor were arrested on the Class 6 felonies as the result of a May 5-11 joint investigation by Pulaski Police Department and Virginia Department of Social Services earlier this year.
Had the case gone to trial, Griffith said investigators were given inconsistent statements as to when the child was last fed. He noted it was determined supervision of the child was inadequate to see that the child received meals as needed.
Kemp, whom Griffith indicated has no prior record, received a four-year suspended sentence and was placed on two years of supervised probation.
Taylor also was sentenced to four years, but he will be required to serve five months of the sentence. He also will be placed on two years supervised probation upon release from custody.
Griffith did not object to Taylor being able to report to jail after Christmas as long as the bonding agent agreed to extend Taylor’s $15,000 secured bond until then. He also reminded Taylor that the full sentence could be imposed if Taylor fails to report to jail by 7 p.m. Dec. 26.
