Marion woman killed in Smyth wreck

SMYTH COUNTY – A 40-year-old Marion woman died early morning two-vehicle crash on Route 11 in Smyth County Friday.

Sandra D. Griffin was northbound in a 2007 Chevy Malibu when her vehicle spun into oncoming traffic after hitting a patch of ice in the road, according to Virginia State Police spokeswoman Deborah Cox. A southbound 2000 Dodge Stratus hit the Malibu, forcing Griffin off the right side of the road and down an embankment.

Both Griffin and the driver of the Dodge, Mackeinze Dennison, 19, of Marion, were wearing seatbelts. Dennison was airlifted to Bristol Regional Medical Center with serious injuries.

The 5:50 a.m. crash remains under investigation by Senior Trooper K.S. Chapman and the State Police Crash Reconstruction Team.
