The Pulaski County Lady Cougar basketball team outscored Patrick Henry in three of four quarters Tuesday in Roanoke to earn their first district win of the season. The win moves the Lady Cougars to 2-2 on the season.
After jumping out to a quick 15-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, the Lady Cougars were outscored by Patrick Henry 16-15 in the second quarter to leave a 30-21 score on the board at the halftime break.
The third quarter was more of the same, as Patrick Henry continued to work but were outscored 17-14, leaving the score at 47-35 heading into the final period.
Pulaski County pulled away in the final quarter, outscoring the Patriots 23-13 to earn the final 70-49 margin of victory.
Sophomore Meredith Mitchell led the scoring for both teams with a game high 24 points. Junior Chelsea Golden stepped her game up with a 20 point performance that included three 3-point shots. Sophomore Moriah Hinton also had a solid game, scoring 13 points and causing plenty of confusion on the defensive end with her attacking style of play. Rachael Greer added 4 points, Tyra Redd scored 3 points, and Kennedi Hart, Carlie Clary, and Maegen Memitt added 2 points each.
Maya Mallory led the Lady Patriots with 13 points, while Cienna Bryant added 11 points.
In the junior varsity contest Patrick Henry earned a 57-50 win over the Lady Cougars.
Both teams got off to a slow start, but Pulaski lead 20-17 at the halftime break. Patrick Henry won the third quarter 12-4 to take the 29-24 lead at the end of the third, and then both teams exploded into an offensive race heading into the end of the game. Patrick Henry outscored Pulaski 28-26 to earn the 57-50 win.
Freshman Savanah Coffey led the Lady Cougars on offense with a game high 24 points. Amanda Alley added 8 points, Laney Cox added 4 points, and Lexi Hurst and Courtney Stone each added 3 points. Helen Counts, Mechelle Hernandez, Rakia Mattox, and A. Caudill each scored 2 points.
The Lady Cougars will be back in action Thursday when they travel to back to Roanoke to face Hidden Valley. Junior Varsity action will get started at 5;30, with the varsity game scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
