SALEM, Va. (AP) — Darren Hays missed an extra point in overtime Saturday, and Giles beat Brunswick 20-19 to win the VHSL’s Group 2A state championship.
Hays’ first point after sailed through the crossbars, seemingly tying the game at 20-all and forcing a second overtime at Salem Stadium, but a false start penalty forced him to back up 5 yards and do it again.
Giles (15-0) tied the game at 13 with one second left in regulation when Tyler Perdue hit Dakota Shrader from 14-yards out in the end zone. The extra period was required only because Bret Whitlow then missed the extra point.
In the overtime, Giles went ahead 20-13 on a 2-yard run by Brian Mann and Whitlow’s PAT.
The Bulldogs (12-3), seeking their first state championship, got a 9-yard scoring pass from Darren Owens to Quantrel Hardy, making the extra point the only thing standing between Brunswick and a second overtime.
