After talk from YMCA Executive Director Allison Hunter of creating free swim classes for some of Pulaski schools’ elementary students, the organization has come through.

Pulaski’s Hensel Eckman YMCA is now offering free swim classes to second grade students at Critzer Elementary and Pulaski Elementary on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 p.m. in the Y’s indoor swimming pool. The program will run through the entire school year, and, as it is part of the school curriculum, students are being provided transportation free of charge. The Y is also providing swim caps and custom designed swim bags to each student who participates.

An expansion of the program to other Pulaski County elementary  schools is currently being considered for next semester.

“The program is operated completely by volunteers to keep the cost free of charge to the students,” Hunter commented. “These volunteers have swimming backgrounds and are giving their time freely to to Pulaski children in our community.”

“We talk about the swim lessons all day on Wednesday,” said Madison Williams, a Pulaski Elementary student. “Everybody always looks forward to going. We can’t wait. We like the YMCA and what they are doing.”
