Pulaski County residents exceeded the goal of collecting 12,000 gift-filled shoeboxes for the global Christmas project Operation Christmas Child.
According to Ashley Wilkes with Samaritan’s Purse, the organization that started the project, Pulaski County residents contributed more than 12,500 shoeboxes filled with toys, school supplies, hygiene items and “notes of encouragement.”
Operation Christmas Child, which is in its 20th year, has delivered more than 100 million shoebox gifts to children in more than 100 countries since its inception in 1993. The collected shoeboxes are delivered to children worldwide and, for many of the children, are the first gifts they have ever received.
Wilkes said Pulaski residents are still able to get involved in the project by HYPERLINK “http://www.samaritanspurse.org/buildonline” \t “_blank” building a box online at samaritanspurse.org.
