Charles William “Bill” Nye, age 92, of Dublin, died Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at Highland Ridge Rehabilitation Center. He was born Dec. 3, 1921 in Glade Spring and was the son of the late Lula Mae Francis Nye and Joseph Dayton Nye. He was a retired Draftsman with 29 years service to the Radford Army Ammunition Plant, was a veteran of WWII having served in the U.S. Navy Intelligence and was one of a few service men that actively worked to break the Japanese Code during WWII.
Bill was a longtime and proud member of the Dublin Presbyterian Church where he served in many capacities, more especially as Deacon, Elder and Clerk of Session. He was a VPI graduate in the class of 1950 with a degree in Industrial Arts Education, and was a member of the Farm Bureau. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Lola N. Woodroof, and Edith N. Pearson.
He is survived by his lovely wife, Elizabeth Sutton Nye of Dublin; a daughter and son-in-law, Lucy Anne and Frank Eugene Nichols of Dublin; two brothers, Joseph D. Nye of Canandaigua, N.Y., and James K. Nye of Whidby Island, Wash.; a sister, Sylvia N. Ferguson and her husband, William, of Abingdon. Also survived by four grandchildren, Travis Pierce of Picayune, Miss., Gregory A. Nichols, Geena Ann Nichols, and Shane A. Nichols, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. at the Dublin Presbyterian Church. Interment will follow in the Dublin Town Cemetery with full military honors. Visiting will be Saturday at the church from 10 a.m. until 11 a.m. service time. In lieu of flowers expressions of sympathy may be made in the form of donations to the Dublin Presbyterian Church.
