Art travel course will take students to Italy

A New River Community College course in Art of the Italian Renaissance will take students on a 14-day tour of Italy during the summer 2014 term.

Students will visit museums, participate in art and architecture discussions, attend lectures by artists and enjoy other cultural experiences during the May 23-June 6 trip. Destinations include Rome, Vatican City, the Bay of Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, Venice and Florence.

Students will be required to keep a daily observation log and complete a final project.

Tammy Parks, NRCC assistant professor of art, will lead the venture. An experienced world traveler who has visited more than 15 countries, Parks said she believes the travel component of the course will make a big difference for students.

“There’s nothing like being able to actually see, hear and experience the country in person,” she says. “My first international trip was to Italy and it was a life-changing experience.”

The total cost of the three-credit course and trip is $4,632.70. The registration deadline is Monday, Jan. 20.
