Sharkey’s is growing up, literally

By SARAH BRADBURY

Sharkey’s Wing & Rib Joint in Radford is undergoing some big changes. The local chain, born in Blacksburg, is expanding its Radford location upstairs in hopes of offering a more relaxed, special environment to students and new guests looking for a place to have a good time.

The restaurant and bar, which has been open since July 2008, currently serves guests in a large one-room atmosphere. “We are really excited for the addition. Downstairs is for everyone, but has become more of a restaurant with a bar which has attracted many families,” said Leslie Rogol Paradiso, owner. “Now we want to provide a bar upstairs that will be a great night spot for the students, which is needed, but also a place for a private party whether it be a fraternity, sorority or a 50th birthday party. We are going to have two very different atmospheres because the students’ needs are different from those of families and locals.”

The change is meant to accommodate all of Sharkey’s guests, offering everyone a space to enjoy. “If we’re doing bingo or trivia downstairs and people don’t want to be a part of it, they can come upstairs.”

She says the upstairs, which is likely to be called Sharkey’s On Top, will definitely be more of a cozy environment. “Upstairs will be a place to go hang out; more of a lounge area with couches.” She says they may have “one night with a DJ and dancing, and maybe bring back comedy night.”

The full menu will not be served upstairs because she says they “don’t want to take away from downstairs.” The food that will be served upstairs will be very light items, such as hotdogs, fresh hot pretzels, popcorn and things of that nature. “We still want people to come downstairs and eat.”

Guests will enter this new and different atmosphere from the current entrance in front of the building and go up a set of stairs to the right, therefore allowing guests to pass back and forth from one area to the other.

Paradiso says they hope to have a grand opening when students get back from Christmas break.
