First ever All-Conference 24 football team announced

The Cougar football team saw nine total players selected to the first ever All-Conference 24 football team this week, with four players being selected for the first team.

Those four players include J.D. Sutphin, a 6′, 210 pound senior linebacker was a constant force and one of the leading tacklers in the region.  Senior Marcus Johnston, who plays quarterback for the Cougars, was selected as the number one punter in the area for a second straight season.  Senior James Reynold, who stands 6’4″ and weighs in at 252 pounds, was selected as one of two first team offensive tackles.  The final Cougar selected for the first team was junior defensive back Malik Eaves, who finished the regular season with three interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Senior Heath White (6’1″, 190) was selected as a second team defensive end, while senior Kareem Calfee (6’4″, 284) was selected as a second team defensive lineman.

The Cougars also saw several players receive an honorable mention.  Senior Quincy Rollins was selected as an honorable mention at running back, along with senior Tyler Ervine at wide receiver.   Junior Tanner Dotson was also selected as a center.

G.W. Danville placed the most players on the first team unit with ten players selected, followed by Salem with eight, and Pulaski with four.  William Fleming and Jefferson Forest each had two players selected for the first team, while Bassett and E.C. Glass had one player each selected.

William Fleming had the most players selected overall with 22, followed by G.W. Danville with 17, E.C. Glass with 15, Salem with 14, Jefferson Forest with 13, and Bassett with 12.  Carroll County had 11 players selected to either the second team or honorable mention.

The squad contained 113 positions.  On offense there were seven running backs, five quarterbacks, six tight-ends, eleven wide receivers, five centers, seven guards, seven tackles, and five kickers.  The defense had 13 defensive backs, 13 defensive linemen, 14 linebackers, seven defensive ends, seven kick returners, five punters, and four kick returners.

    That’s great! Congrats to all our Cougars! Any idea who named the teams? Was it sportswriters? Or Conference 24 coaches? Or somebody else entirely? Just wondering who has seen enough of all of the teams in the conference to make the decisions. The article doesn’t say.

      JT, the All-Conference team is selected the same way that the All-District teams were selected in the past. The coaches met, gave their list of players they felt deserved recognition, and then the names were voted on. A coach cannot vote for his own players, so they should have stats prepared to argue their cases for each player.
