NRCC welding professor receives award
New River Community College welding professor Mark Gilbert has received the District Director Certificate Award from the Southwest Virginia Section of the American Welding Society (AWS).
The award, presented by section chairman Bill Rhodes, recognizes “loyalty, devotion to the affairs of the Society, effective service in the advancement of welding and generous contributions of time and effort on behalf of the Society.”
Additionally, Gilbert accepted the position of education chairman for the Southwest Virginia AWS section.
Gilbert is an AWS-certified welding inspector and an AWS-certified welding educator with 37 years of experience in the industry. He holds a master’s degree in teaching from Hollins University and a bachelor’s degree in industrial technology from Roger Williams University in Bristol, R.I.
NRCC advisors present Career Coach Academy
Five of New River Community College’s career advisors recently gave a presentation at Virginia’s Career Coach Academy in Hampton.
Pam Herrmann, Kim Matthews, Bridget Meneghini, Rod Reedy and Dr. John Wenrich led a session detailing the employability workshops they have offered to the local community through NRCC’s Office of Workforce Development.
Dr. John Wenrich also presented a separate session entitled “Am I Losing a Job to Facebook? Using Social Media Correctly,” that dealt with understanding online presence.
NRCC adjunct instructor releases film
New River Community College adjunct English instructor Rusty Whitener’s film “Season of Miracles” was released by Elevating Entertainment Motion Pictures Tuesday, Oct. 1. The film was screened at Radford Theater in September and included an open-forum question and answer session.
The film is a production that follows Whitener’s novel of the same name. The story features a team of 12-year-old baseball players on a quest to win the 1974 Little League championship with a newcomer and an autistic baseball savant.
The cast includes actors Grayson Russell of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” series and John Schneider, known for his role as Bo Duke in “The Dukes of Hazzard” television series. Whitener is also a part of the cast, playing the role of Mr. Forrester, and NRCC career coach Susy Schumann plays the role of Mary Keller.
