New basketball radio network set to launch for upcoming season

RADFORD, Va. - Radford Athletics and the RU Radio Network announced today a new two-year partnership with Cumulus NRV in Blacksburg to carry both men’s and women’s basketball games live on its commercial affiliates. The Highlander men’s games can now be heard on WWBU, Super Sports 101.7 FM, and the women’s contests will be aired on AM-1460 WRAD.

“We are thrilled to partner with Cumulus NRV to carry Highlander Men’s and Women’s Basketball on the air,” Director of Athletics, Robert Lineburg said. “This will allow our alumni and fans in the area to be a part of the excitement surrounding our two basketball programs.”

Super Sports 101.7, the New River Valley’s Sports Station, has an FM signal which covers the entire Radford area from Salem to West Virginia. Around the Radford campus, the men’s games will also be carried live on the flagship hub of the network, FM 89.9 WRVU, for the second straight season. For the first time since 2007, the Radford women’s games will have a broadcast home on a commercial affiliate in WRAD.

Scott Stevens, Director of Operations at Cumulus NRV in Blacksburg, noted both the strong community relationship between his stations and the University. “Supersports 101.7, The True Oldies channel 1460 AM WRAD, and Cumulus Broadcasting are excited to renew this relationship with the Radford University Sports network. Highlander basketball, like our stations, is a vital part of our local community. We look forward to a great year for the Highlanders!”

For those outside the broadcast area, the games will be carried live on each station’s website through iHeart Radio. Those links will be available on the Radford Athletics website prior to each broadcast.

The deal, which runs through the 2014-15 season, also includes opportunities for Highlander fans to get more information on the teams beyond just the game broadcasts.

Radford head basketball coaches Mike Jones and Mike McGuire will have a regular guest appearance each week on the Scott Stevens Morning Show, which airs weekday mornings on FM 107.1 WPSK – 107 Country. Cumulus will also carry via tape delay the Highlander Coaches Show, which is recorded live at Macado’s in Radford each week. The coaches show can be heard live on-line through WRVU’s web stream as well.

“This new partnership with Cumulus is a tremendous opportunity for our athletics department,” said Rick Watson,Director of Broadcasting and Director of Sales and Sponsorship with Radford Athletics and . “Super Sports 101.7 FM has a wide range frequency that allows our men’s basketball games to heard all over the New River Valley. And we are equally excited that our women’s basketball program will once again be carried on AM 1460-WRAD. This deal not only benefits the two basketball programs but also our University, as well as our corporate sponsors and alumni.”

Watson will again serve as the Voice of the Highlanders in broadcasting the play-by-play for each men’s contest during the season. He will be joined by color analysts and former Highlander standout, Stephen Barber at home games, and Tom Galbraith on the road. Jamie Forrest will produces the men’s network broadcasts and hosts studio scoreboard updates pre-game, at the half, and post-game. Eric Wilson, in his first season with RU, provides the on-air talent for the Highlander women’s teams.

The Highlander men open their season in Washington, D.C. on Friday, November 8, which will serve as the official launch of the new partnership. The women open the following night on Saturday, November 9 at home vs. Emory and Henry.
