The beginning of a six-month open enrollment period for healthcare through the Health Insurance Marketplace has begun. Americans can now shop for family or individual benefits through the marketplace and compare plans to find the coverage that is right for them under the Affordable Care Act, also known as “Obamacare.”
Residents of Virginia will use the website www.healthcare.gov to apply for coverage, compare plans and enroll for the benefits they choose. The website guides users through a series of steps to present the options available depending on information about income, household size and more. Small business owners may also use the marketplace to find and provide coverage for employees.
The marketplace lets users compare all the plans and programs they are eligible for and find out if they qualify for lower monthly premiums and out-of-pocket costs on coverage. Finally, the website allows users to carry out the enrollment process and helps answer questions, including those about pre-existing conditions and essential benefits.
Due to the large volume of people using the marketplace in the first days after open enrollment begins, it is expected that there may be delays or problems in accessing the site.
