Yesterday people in our area found out the hard way that they were unable to use their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards to purchase groceries. The problem began around 9 or 10 a.m. and continued late into the evening.
It was reported by the Associated Press last night at 10:59 p.m. that EBT benefits have been restored. People in 17 states found themselves temporarily unable to use their benefits Saturday, after a routine test of backup systems by vendor Xerox Corp. resulted in a system failure. Xerox announced late in the evening that access has been restored for users in the 17 states.
According to spokeswoman Jennifer Wasner, “Restarting the EBT system required time to ensure service was back at full functionality.”
