Born July 16, 1931 in Helsingborg, Sweden to Clara and Hilding Paulson, Walter Hilding Paulson passed away early Sunday, Sept. 1, 2013. Walter grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., graduated from Adelphi Academy, then Columbia University, with a degree in Mining Engineering. He served in the U.S. Army. He was employed by New Jersey Zinc Company in Austinville, then National Gypsum Company in Pearisburg.
He truly enjoyed living in Southwest Virginia, calling it “God’s Country.” Throughout his life, he spent much time in the service of others, working with the Austinville Ruritan Club, Boy Scouts of America, and as a long standing member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Alice “Betty” Paulson.
He will be greatly missed by Ann Henley Paulson, his wife of eight years, children and grandchildren. He is survived by his children and their families, Dianne, Bill, Seth and Abigail Lacy of Radford; Mark, Anne, Courtney and Nick Paulson of Durham, N.C.; Martin, Ann Marie, Brigitta, Marta, and Louisa Paulson of Draper, and Ann’s daughter and grandson, Susan and Todd Paris of Stuart.
Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pulaski. A celebration of Walter’s life begins at 3 p.m. with Pastor Terrie Sternberg officiating, followed by a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery in Pulaski. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the Paulson-Amos Scholarship Fund, c/o Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, Pulaski, would be appreciated.
