Wal-Mart to open 2 DC hiring centers after dispute

WASHINGTON (AP) — Wal-Mart is opening two hiring centers in Washington just days after the D.C. Council failed to override a veto of an effort to require other large retailers to pay employees a “living wage.”

Company officials tell WJLA-TV (http://wj.la/1aVSZZe ) the hiring centers will open Monday. They will recruit potential employees for Wal-Mart stores under construction at H and 2nd streets in northeast Washington and on Georgia Avenue in northwest Washington.

The hiring centers will be located at 900 2nd St. NE and 7818 Eastern Ave. NW.

Wal-Mart is planning to open six stores in the District of Columbia. The company threatened to pull out of plans for three of the stores if the “living wage” bill became law. The legislation would have forced large stores to pay employees $12.50 per hour.
