INDEPENDENCE, Va. (AP) — Virginia is opening a new correctional facility in Grayson County.
Gov. Bob McDonnell is set to open the River North Correctional Center on Wednesday afternoon. It’s the first new Virginia Department of Corrections facility since 2007.
The prison that will house around 1,000 inmates was completed in 2010, but it has remained empty due to state budget woes.
McDonnell’s budget for fiscal year 2014 included $14.3 million to open the facility. An additional $3.5 million was appropriated to open by October.
Inmates are set to start moving into the facility on Oct. 7. It is expected to employ up to 350 people.
