Each Friday, two of the 18 participating students will complete a portion of their clinical hours by performing cleanings and other dental procedures with adult patients.
“Having the hygiene students here is a two way blessing; it helps our patients receive care in a timelier manner and it helps the students to refine their professional skills,” said Roz Nelson, director of administration and dental operations. Althea Grubb, clinic staff dental hygienist, assists the students and grades them on their job performance.
FDCNRV provides dental care to Medicaid-covered and uninsured children and adults, as well as low-income Medicare recipients. Two staff dentists and 24 volunteer NRV dentists and their support staffs perform clinic services.
The dental clinic shares space with Free Clinic of the New River Valley, 215 Roanoke St., Christiansburg. For more information about FDCNRV, call 381-8151 or visit www.nrvfreeclinic.org/family-dental-clinic.html.
