Alaina Casioppo is the new AmeriCorps Volunteer in Service to America (VISTA) serving with the Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE) in Pulaski and Giles Counties. Casioppo is originally from Canton, Conn., but traveled down south for her undergraduate degree.
She graduated from Roanoke College in spring of 2013 with a bachelor of science in health and exercise science. As an AmeriCorps VISTA member, Casioppo has made a yearlong commitment to serve the local community in efforts to fight illiteracy, improve health services, foster economic development, and assist low-income communities.
Casioppo will be working with Senior Extension Agent Sarah Burkett to sustain existing educational programs and create new programs and partnerships.
Some upcoming programs include:
Sew and Sew- This sewing series is taught by retired family and consumer sciences teacher Marianne Baillos, and teaches the basics of hand sewing. Participants will also learn to upgrade their clothing and sewing machine skills. This program takes place Mondays, Sept.16, 23, 30 and Oct. 7 from 6-8:30 p.m. at Pulaski County Administration Building in the downstairs conference room.
Cooking Matters at the Store in Pulaski- This guided shopping tour shows ways to save money and eat healthy while living within your income, Wednesday, Sept. 25 from 6-8 p.m. at Food City.
Eat Healthy-Be Active in Pulaski- This nutrition and fitness program for 25 participants is designed to improve physical health and eating habits, Thursdays Sept. 12 through Oct.17 from 6-7 p.m. at Valley Harvest Ministries in Dublin.
Step to Nutrition and Health in Pulaski- This nutrition and fitness series is designed to increase physical activity and improve nutritional health, at the Hensel Eckman YMCA, Tuesdays Jan. 14, 21, 28 and Feb. 4 from 6-7:30 p.m.
