The Pulaski Mariners won the Appalachian East Division and clinched home-field advantage throughout the playoffs tonight with Bluefield’s 8-5 loss in Kingsport. They’ll open their first round series tomorrow on the road against the East runner-up, the Bluefield Blue Jays. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. ET at Bowen Field.
The Mariners will return home Sunday to host game two with first pitch set for 7:00 p.m. ET. Game three (if necessary) will also be played at Calfee Park with another 7:00 p.m. ET start.
The Appy West Division champ Greeneville Astros will open on the road against the Kingsport Mets in the other first round matchup.
Pulaski has reached the playoffs as a Mariners’ affiliate two times, the last coming in 2010 and the other in 2008. The Mariners lost in the Appy Championship in 2008 and were eliminated in the first round in 2010. A Pulaski team hasn’t won an Appalachian League title since 1991, when they were an affiliate of the Atlanta Braves.
Right-hander Edwin Diaz (5-2, 1.43) will take the mound in the series opener. Diaz took home honors as the Appalachian League Pitcher of the Year. Former Virginia Tech Hokie Eddie Campbell (3-3, 3.72) is scheduled to start in game two at Calfee Park.
