Betty Louise Holden Burgess, age 91, formerly of Dublin, died Thursday, Aug. 1, 2013 in Florida.
She was born in Buffalo, N.Y., the daughter of the late Jason and Mildred Klopp Holden.
Surviving are children, Judith Curtiss of Palm Bay Fla., Nancy Miller (Frank) of Charleston W.Va., Russell Jr. (Susan) of Daytona Beach, Fla., Bob (Peggy) of Cullman, Ala., Beverly Thornton (Vernon) of Dublin and Dickie (Gail) of Milford, Del.; 16 grandchildren and 28 great-grandchildren.
The Burgesses moved to West Virginia in 1949 to serve as ministers. Betty was a faithful wife and mother during this time, as well as serving in her community.
When Russell became executive secretary of Ruritan National, they moved to Dublin. There she attended New Dublin Presbyterian Church and was ordained the first woman elder in that church in 1975. Betty went back to school at New River Community College, where she earned her degree and graduated “Summa Cum Laude.”
She moved to Charleston, W.Va., where she worked for Kanawha Senior Services. She retired to Florida where she spent her last years. She will be remembered for her love of her family, her service to God, for her kindness and caring for others. When the Lord greets her, He will say, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant. Enter into thy rest.”
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Aug. 10, at noon, at New Dublin Presbyterian Church, Dublin, with the Rev. Andrew Taylor-Troutman officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. until the service time at the church.
