A fisherman who hiked into Gatewood Park to fish Wednesday, then became disoriented and couldn’t find his way back out of the woods, was located by searchers that evening, according to authorities.
Capt. Jeff Saunders with Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office said members of Pulaski County Search and Rescue Team and Pulaski County Wildland Crew found Jerry Mabry of Dublin around 6:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Saunders said Mabry parked his truck about a mile from Gatewood and hiked to the reservoir to fish, but when heavy rain and fog set in, “he got turned around and became lost.” Mabry was able to climb to the top of Chestnut Ridge and use his cell phone to call 911.
By “pinging” Mabry’s cell phone, dispatchers were able to obtain GPS coordinates for Mabry’s location. Searchers responded for the search around 3:30 p.m. and found Mabry near the location of the “ping.”
Although Mabry was wet and cold, Saunders said he was checked by REMSI personnel and deemed to be in good health.
